Day 2
Steenberg is the venue for today's round. The course was designed and built by one of South Africa's leading golf course architects, Peter Matkovich. The private Steenberg Golf Club is available to hotel guests, members and their guests only. The golf course has been designed to take full advantage of natural features and hazards.
The design of the central clubhouse is harmonious with the historic architecture of the estate. The cool, airy rooms are fronted with green French doors onto a terrace. The course was designed and built by one of South Africa's leading golf course architects, Peter Matkovich. The 18 hole championship golf course meanders leisurely through the Steenberg vineyards, pine forests and gentle waterways.
The course features four distinct areas: Wetlands, Parklands, The Cape Flats and Fynbos. With five different tees, the course can be enjoyed by all, from championship to junior level. Many golfers envy the superb condition of this soft spike course and it is widely renowned for having the best greens in Cape Town.
There are also a number of practice areas, including a driving range, chipping area with sand traps and a large putting green. After golf why not continue your exploration of the Cape Peninsula. Perhaps a drive to Cape Point, where the Atlantic & Indian Oceans are reputed to meet. Don't forget a stop at Boulders to experience the Penguins colonies. Dinner could be at one of the many top class Waterfront restaurants.
Day 3
Today you will play the magnificent Pearl Valley course. Spanning some 212 hectares of prime Cape Winelands real estate, Pearl Valley Golf Estates is a magnificent 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. His unique touch is evident at Pearl Valley Golf Estates. This golf legend sees the Pearl Valley course as the sum of his knowledge and his experience. This spectacular course provides one of the top golf experiences in South Africa - and one of the best in the world. Pearl Valley Golf Estates was recently rated the '5th Best Golf Course in South Africa,' by Golf Digest and received a '5 Star Golf Experience,' by Compleat Golfer. To meet the 'Golden Bear's' uncompromising standards of golf course design and aesthetic beauty, a combination of the intense colours of the greens and fairways, together with the brilliant white river sand lining the bunkers was carefully planned, to make Pearl Valley Golf Estates the most visually spectacular golf course in the country. Bunkers on Nicklaus' signature courses are renowned for being shallow, long and relatively undaunting. Every hole is played against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains surrounding the estate and all are challenging due to the bunkers and fast greens. The course has been designed with the area's prevailing winds in mind; the winter north westerly and the summer south easterly. All par 3s and par 5s play in different directions, ensuring that the same conditions are not experienced too many times in one round. The 4th is the 'Signature' hole and one of the most scenic of par 3s.
After your golf, why not visit one of the wine farms in the Stellenbosch / Paarl region. We will gladly recommend the best options. In Stellenbosch you might want to visit the famous Spier Wine Estate. See their famous cheetah conservation programme in action. If you are brave enough, share a cage with these magnificent animals. Dinner could be an incredible African experience at Moyo. Dining under the starlit African sky, Moyo is unlike any other restaurant. Bedouin tents and Gazebos are placed throughout the garden and create an almost nomad African Village. Watching over this Moyo Village is a 300 year old Oak Tree, a testament to Africa's greatness. Growing from the earth, pulsating water features crafted from copper are living works of art and skilfully constructed tree houses raise from the ground and take to the tree tops - an unparalleled dining experience. The buffet span is an incredible 25 metres. The flavour of freshly cooked potjies, tagines and grilled meats fills the air with aromas of cumin, paprika and rosemary. African musicians complete the scene. A truly memorable evening.
Day 4
With lovely views of Table Mountain from most holes, this Championship course offers a beautiful setting that will make your third round truly memorable. Royal Cape Golf Club is a true championship course having hosted the South African Open no less than ten times and the SA Amateur Championships eight times. The most recent SA Open held here was in 1996 and was won by Ernie Els. Extensive work was done on the greens in 2000 to bring them up to the USGA standards and the course today is a fine test of golf and worthy of its championship rating. Essentially it is a very flat parkland course, well maintained and a pleasure to play with lovely views of the surrounding mountains.
But don't be deceived by its apparent easiness. The fairways are narrow, demanding extreme accuracy off the tee, wayward shots can be heavily penalized amongst the trees and the greens are well bunkered. There is also plenty of water on the course, notably at the corner of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and also the 14th, 15th and 16th. The 4th and 15th are beautiful par-3's, the 15th in particular requiring a finely judged shot over the water which encroaches right up to the edge of the green. The most difficult holes are the par-4 3rd, at 435m the longest two-shotter on the course, and the par-4 14th, a dog-leg right played into the teeth of the prevailing south-easter and with water guarding the right front and side of the green.
Day 5
Check out of your Waterfront Hotel. You will need to make your way to Cape Town International Airport and return your rental car. Check in for your onward flight to Durban. On arrival at Durban International Airport, you will be met and assisted with your rental car. You will be given maps and directions to your hotel. You will be given a comprehensive orientation, receive vouchers, plus full directions and directed to Selborne Hotel & Spa. This sub-tropical retreat on the edge of the warm Indian Ocean is only 30 minutes south of Durban International Airport. A temperate climate and lush country setting ensure exceptional leisure. The Selborne Hotel, Spa & Golf Estate is also famous for its large stately manor house and beautiful subtropical gardens that stretch to a private beach club that is only a few sandy footsteps to the beach. Woven around the natural rock and verdant indigenous coastal forest, the estate itself is home to duiker, mongoose, bushbuck and over 160 bird species and offers unequalled natural beauty and tranquillity.
Day 6
Take up the challenge of one of the most spectacular golf courses in southern Africa as you play your fourth round at the Selbourne Park course. Wild coastal forest frames a superbly manicured course where the only disturbance may be one of nature's many creatures. Numerous water features demand accuracy but with the reward of breathtaking beauty at every turn. Mr Denis Barker, a well known local sugar farmer and dairy farmer purchased Selborne Park in 1979, which was used as his family home and to run his pedigree Jersey cattle herd. In 1985, following a visit to the United States and Canada, Denis decided to build a golf course on the property. Together with a handful of local friends who offered support and advice, Denis designed and built the beautiful 18 hole golf course with his younger son, Gary and Selborne duly became South Africa's first golf estate. In many ways, the privately owned and built Selborne golf course, which was voted 7th best in SA in its 3rd year, was the catalyst for what has become a booming "golf estate industry" with over 30 resorts now in the Southern African region.
After golf you could spend the afternoon at the nearby Beach resort or indulge yourself at the Spa.
Day 7
Today you play the top course in the area, The Durban Country Club. The Durban Country Club came into existence on 9th December 1922. The decision to build it grew largely from the misfortunes of the Royal Durban, South Africa's oldest club which was host to the 1919 national golf championships: the course became so waterlogged that the winner took 320 squelching strokes to finish. There was no guarantee that the low lying course would not flood again and so Durban was in danger of losing its place on the national tournament circuit. The re-designed course opened in 1922 and two years later Durban Country Club staged the first of many South African Opens. Much of the history of the game in South Africa has been enacted here, and most of the great players have made their pilgrimage to it. Sid Brews, Bobby Locke and Gary Player have has some of their greatest moments at the Country Club. The course saw Gary Player's first South African Open success in 1956 with 286. He returned in 1969 (having won the title another five times in the interim) to score a 273, which included a then record round of 64. In 1998 Ernie Els won his third South African Open at the club.
The course, overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary and the Indian Ocean has hosted 16 SA Opens in total, more than any other club in South Africa. Overlooking the course is the classic Cape Dutch style Club House, its timeless grace making the name Durban Country Club synonymous with relaxed elegance. Over the years, the Club has played host to celebrities, royalty and golfing greats. Photos, antiques and memorabilia in the club house bear testimony to its fine traditions
Following golf you could take a tour of Durban before returning to Selbourne.
Day 8
After breakfast check out of Selbourne and take a leisurely drive down the lush South Coast passing through beautiful seaside resorts on your way to your next hotel. You will be spending the next 3 nights at the 4-star Mondazur Hotel at San Lameer. The Mondazur Hotel has just undergone a spectacular multi-million rand renovation to enhance its reputation as one of the most desired holiday destinations in South Africa.
This afternoon you tee off at the San Lameer Golf Club. San Lameer is a conservation haven with 195 different bird species, abundant wildlife - including impala, red, gray and blue duiker, reedbuck and bushbuck - and indigenous fauna and flora. Add to this a subtropical climate, the Indian Ocean and, of course, the championship golf course and you have a golfer's paradise where Eagles and Birdies of all kind abound. Set in the heart of this unique natural environment, San Lameer offers you everything you would include in a dream course. Eighteen memorable holes that weave a natural challenge through the open glades, forest and wetlands with the relaxed roar of the Indian Ocean cheering you on. The 18 hole championship golf course was designed by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes. The course itself is sculptured around one of the last remaining wetland forests on the South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal. It was designed to avoid areas of sensitive vegetation and utilises the indigenous plants and shrubs in the natural features of the course. The club house is recognised as one of the most attractive in South Africa with spectacular views from the spacious terraces surrounding it.
Day 9
Following breakfast, drive the short distance to Port Edward where you will be playing the number 2 course in the region, The Wild Coast Sun Country Club, a rugged beauty of a course. Carts are compulsory but this does not detract from the competitive challenge. The course may be a daunting challenge for professionals and amateurs alike but its wide fairways and huge greens, attract golfers of all levels. A first glance at the score card might suggest that this course is a bit of a push-over - less than 6 000 metres in length with six par threes. On face value this might seem so but in reality the Wild Coast Sun Country Club is one of South Africa's most testing layouts. Indeed renowned American golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones Jnr has created a dramatic golfing experience overlooking the Ocean.
Possibly the greatest challenge is to conquer the prevailing winds which add an entirely new dimension to the course. Some of South Africa's finest and certainly most dramatic golf holes can be found here. The thirteenth, a par 3 played across a waterfall is generally regarded the best short hole in the country. And for drama nothing can match the outstanding par 5, twelfth. Here the drive is hit from a high elevated tee to a fairway far below that snakes its way through a valley flanked by a dam and stream on the left with a natural hillock on the right. The more of the river you take on with your drive the easier the approach to the green - an excellent example of a risk and reward par 5.
After your golf, perhaps spend the day at the Wild Coast Sun Resort, one of the Sun International Group's resorts that offers a casino and a variety of water sports like water-skiing, jet skiing and parasailing. The Wild Coast Sun also provides tennis, squash, and horse riding too.
Day 10
Today you will be checking out of Mondazur and heading north along the coast, back to Durban, as you make your way to Durban International Airport and return your rental car in time for your flight home.
